Motorsport Engineering & Management MTech/MSc/PgDip/PgCert

Bursaries available - up to £5000+fees

Suitable for graduates in engineering, aerospace, materials science and related disciplines who wish to gain knowledge of the engineering, management, science and technologies relevant to motorsport. The part-time option will allow practitioners to extend their professional development within their current employment.

Takes you on to the possibility of a career in motorsport. Former students have gone onto careers with companies such as Williams F1, McLaren Racing, Ferrari, BMW Sauber, Red Bull Technology, Renault F1, Mercedes High Performance Engines, DAMS, Ultimate Motorsport, M-Sport, Prodrive and Xtrac. Graduates also go onto highly rewarding careers in other sectors such as aerospace, automotive and energy.

You will be taught by members of research and academic staff at Cranfield University.

Developed in partnership with the motorsport sector, this course gives an overview of the key technologies, science, engineering and management processes associated with motorsport.

Cranfield has a range of facilities relating to motorsport including wind tunnels, the Cranfield Impact Centre (CIC), the Off-Road Dynamics Facility, and composites and advanced materials laboratories. Cranfield also has its own racecar and set-up equipment.

Students compete for a number of prizes such as the Sir Jackie Stewart OBE prize, the Professor Adrian Reynard prize and the Motor Sports Association (MSA) prize.

The MSc course consists of eight one-week assessed modules, a group project and an individual thesis project. Students undertaking the Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) complete eight modules and the group design project. Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) students complete the induction module, five modules and an assignment.

The modules
• Composite Structures for Motorsport
• Metallic Structures for Motorsport
• Motorsport Aerodynamics and Computational Fluid Dynamics
• Motorsport Electronics and Data Acquisition
• Motorsport Power Train Design
• Motorsport Vehicle Dynamics
• Project and Financial Management for Motorsport
• The Business of Motorsport

Group design project
This project provides full-time students with the opportunity to take responsibility for project tasks, while working as teams under academic supervision. Success is dependent on the integration of various activities, working within agreed objectives, deadlines and budgets. Experience gained is highly valued by both students and prospective employers. For part-time students a dissertation usually replaces the group project.

Individual thesis project
The individual thesis projects provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to carry out independent research, think and work in an original way, contribute to knowledge, and overcome genuine problems.

Assessment: Taught modules MSc 40%, PgDip 66.6%, PgCert 87.5%. Group project (dissertation for part-time students) MSc 20%, PgDip 33.3%, PgCert 12.5%. Individual project MSc 40%.
